The aim of this study was to clarify the development possibilities for housing on this historical site in Amsterdam. The site itself is the last remaining residue of a “windmill park” that was situated in this area in the 17^th century. The windmills actually formed one of the first industrial parks in the Netherlands and were situated outside the fortification of Amsterdam.The original east-west orientation of the plots have – with the exception of the actual site – been completely disappeared and replaced by 19^th century housing blocks.

The windmill and the wood drying sheds around it are of great historic value but the terrain is abandoned since years. The study examines if a development impulse could add new feasible functions could to the site. Within several scenarios we allocated different amounts of new functions such as housing, restaurants and public amenities. The scenarios varied from extensive up to very intensive adding of new programme. Finally a well balanced in-between scenario was chosen and presented to the borough’s planning department.
