Our third design for a beach pavilion in Castricum is again based on second-hand containers and a minuscule budget. JAFFA was intended as a spin-off of DEINING, to be rented out for private parties or receptions in the evenings, but also as a hangout for a younger clientele during daytime. Therefore our design provides a “loitering area” on the outside, with a broad flight of stairs leading from the sandy beach up to the pavilion and the snack bar. The outer skin of the pavilion is clad in light- blue lacquered wooden boards. The windows facing the beach have sturdy greyish-blue frames, making JAFFA recognizable between the other beach pavillions. Inside, the soffits are just as deep, serving as benches where people can sit and enjoy the view of the sea.The interior of the pavilion has a more refined finish, with dark oiled wooden floorboards and glossy white wooden walls plus sitting area and bar. As a special feature, the ceiling was covered with a translucent PVC canvas, printed with a blueish jellyfish motif. At night, the canvas is lit from behind by LED lights, so the guests can dance under a pulsating, multicoloured sky. |
