In our vision for a zero emission building for Buiklsoterham we have focused on three aspects of sustainability serving its inhabitants: “cosiness”, adaptability and energy efficient techniques. In our concept we speak of “Adaptives”. This means secluded collective spaces on the plot, function neutral buildings with a flexible layout, oversized in construction and spatial dimensions and covered by a high-quality building skin with removable facade elements.
The first step towards zero emissions is obviously the reduction of energy demand. The building elements are therefore compact in layout and highly insulated. The second step is using passive solar energy by optimising the orientation towards the sun using solar panels / boilers and fully-glassed greenhouses. The third step is giving the user the possibility of locally adjusting the inside climate and therefore stimulating a responsible use of energy. Integrated shutters are one of the possibilities of shading (at daytime) and isolating (at night time) the different units. Finally a collective heat pump is providing the building with warm water and heating.
