Housing company Eigen Haard has purchased the former site of the STORK factory on the northern bank of the river IJ. As the city council decided to block housing functions on this particular site for the next 10 years, we were invited to develop a vision for a low- budget temporary multifunctional infill of the existing buildings. Starting point of our proposal was a thorough investigation on fire regulation issues. The existing structure hardly has any fire protection, so we proposed to introduce an overall sprinkler system. Thanks to this, it would be possible to preserve the spaciousness of the existing industrial halls, while allowing flexible subdivisions according to the different needs of potential tenants. In the main hall we propose to use the existing cranes for hoisting movable space boxes for different types of events. In the smaller sub-halls we proposed a camping-like infill with a food plaza and various workshop areas. In addition, we created new access options for the office spaces adjacent to the industrial halls. Finally we developed an overall design- and marketing strategy that is reflected in the use of colours and materials in the inner and outer public spaces. | |||||
