The Kusntfort Vijfhuizen an art foundation situated in a protected former fortification complex - has launched a competition to make a historical barrack adjacent to the fort usable for art exhibitions. In order to facilitate all kind of activities the barrack should be isolated, but without loosing its historical integrity. In our proposal, the barrack itself will not be altered and serves only for exhibitions. All new facilities are situated in an outside annex which links the two terrain levels and invites the public to have a coffee or visit the exhibitions. The zigzag-shaped volume consists of a tube-like, half-open wooden structure, containing a red glass box. As visitors enter the tube, they can walk straight through it via a public staircase. Or they can enter the glass volume, where they will find a terraced seating area, an info-bar, guarderobe and toilets. Next to the info-bar lies the entrance to the barrack. Upon entering the exhibition space, visitors will find themselves in a clean open space where all kind of events and exhibitions can be properly accommodated. Here we only introduce a new insulation layer plus a light-weight stretch metal finishing.
